At a company’s Christmas party, Marek receives two gifts at once. After all these years, he runs into his high school sweetheart, Veronika. On top of that, Radan, the head of the real estate development firm where he works, offers him a partnership. But as is often the case, nothing comes completely for free.
For all of us, Christmas is first and foremost a holiday when the whole family gets together. But that’s not the case for Tomáš. Seven-year-old Tomáš was born on Christmas Eve. And on the day he was born, he lost his mother. So, together with his dad Marek, his uncle Pája, and his grandfather, he celebrates Christmas as a birthday, and all Christmas trappings are off-limits in this unique household.
Compared to the pragmatic Marek, Veronika is like someone from another world. And to little Tomáš, she’s like an angel who brings a completely new and unexpected perspective on everything he’s associated with Christmas so far.
And so, for the first time in his life, Tomáš compares the chances of the fabulous and superbly marketed Santa Claus and the mysterious Baby Jesus, whose image no advertising agency has yet managed to capture, despite all their efforts.
Just like the Christmas tradition, Marek resists getting into a serious relationship because he’s afraid of disappointment. He’s afraid to believe that a miracle could happen—one that would rebuild a bridge across the chasm of anxiety and pain that feels so bottomless to him, especially at Christmas. And he certainly doesn’t want to subject Tomáš to such a trial. Veronika, too, has her secrets and her own reasons for resisting a serious relationship. But all their resolutions are somehow beginning to slip out of their control. Tomáš’s grandfather is an emeritus professor of hematology. A stern and distinguished gentleman. He helps Marek as much as he can and suffers from the fact that his other son, Pavel, is the exact opposite of Marek. Irresponsible, impractical, and unpredictable. But Tomáš won’t hear a word against Uncle Pavel. And after seeing the antics they get up to together, no one can blame him. The professor takes a liking to Veronika surprisingly easily. And thanks to his profession, he is the first to uncover her secret. The reason Veronika doesn’t want to commit is her illness. And it is far more serious than Veronika is willing to admit. And the chance of a breakthrough in treatment is nothing short of a miracle.
Is Christmas the perfect time for a miracle? And what is everyone prepared and willing to do for it? And to sacrifice?
